  • Training of medical staff within 20 enterprises committed to fighting HIV-AIDS in Burkina Faso
This programme, which was launched after the drafting of the Terms of Reference by SIDA-ENTREPRISES and after a call for proposals, comprises training provided to 42 health-care workers in the workplace within 20 enterprises committed to fighting HIV-AIDS

Length: 21 days per year over a period of 3 years
Period: July 2008 – June 2011
Cost of the programme : 200 000 € (wholly funded by SIDA-ENTREPRISES)

Partners
Initiative Conseil International (ICI) is a consulting firm specialised in carrying-out studies and implementing development projects. For further information, see the heading « Partnerships ». This partnership was selected following the call for proposals by a committee comprising representatives of AIDES, SIDACTION, SOLTHIS and of the WHO.

Objectives
Providing a competent medical referent to enterprises committed to programmes for fighting HIV-AIDS in order to facilitate access to care and treatment within the enterprise and to fight stigmatisation and discrimination.

Direct beneficiaries: 42 players in 20 enterprises
The enterprises were selected according to their number of employees, their vulnerability to HIV-AIDS due to their sector of activity and their involvement in a sound programme for fighting HIV-AIDS for the benefit of employees, of their families and even of neighbouring communities. Their commitment is official due to the fact that they belong to the AECV-B Coalition (Cf. Burkina Faso country plan) and/or to the ILO/AIDS project (Cf. « Partners » heading)

Final beneficiaries
The 12 700 employees and their families (45 000 people), as well as the communities of Ouagadougou, of Bobo-Dioulasso and of Fada n’gourma.

Programme
The 1st year of training is mainly theoretical. It comprises three courses: « HIV and the workplace », « advice for screening and communication strategy for obtaining behavioural change » and « overall care/integrated care for all diseases (ICD) ».
The 2nd and 3rd year of training are more practical: health-care workers are first expected to follow the course, then to define and develop their « Personal Commitment Plan » between each training session, the objective being to push them to put into practice their newly acquired knowledge – with the help of a tutor.

Activities already performed
Participants are divided into two groups for the first training session. 19 nurses were trained between December 15th and 20th 2008 and 23 were trained between January 12th and 16th 2009.

Coordination
The project coordination unit comprises a coordinator and a project director for I.C.I, the OST director, Professor Drabo (Yalgado hospital), etc. Moreover, I.C.I introduced this programme to the Project Advisory Council (PAC) set-up under the ILO/AIDS project and including all actors involved in the issue of AIDS in the workplace.

Evaluation
Towards the end of the three-year programme, an impact assessment is carried-out by an independent expert.
